MGO vs UMF: Mānuka Honey Grades Explained

MGO VS UMF IN Mānuka HONEY

What is the difference?

Every jar of genuine Mānuka Honey carries a grade, and the two you’ll see most are MGO and UMF™. They measure different things, but they line up closely, which is why our labels often show both. This page explains what each one means and how they compare, so you can choose the right Mānuka with confidence.

What does MGO mean?

MGO (methylglyoxal) is the natural compound that gives Mānuka Honey its unique properties. The number on the jar is measured in milligrams per kilogram, and the higher the MGO, the more potent your honey.

What does UMF™ mean?

UMF™ (Unique Mānuka Factor) is a wider certification from the UMF™ Honey Association. It is unique to New Zealand and tests four natural markers to confirm the honey is genuine Mānuka. Each UMF™ grade has a matching minimum MGO, shown in the conversion chart below. Not sure which grade suits you? Try our 60-second quiz today!
